How to quit smoking, loose weight, or achieve anything you set your mind to!
Strength is defined in the dictionary as 'the capability to exert power'. Therefore, let us look at power and see if we can create a foundation for further reasonings. Power on the other hand is defined as 'the ability to cause things to happen'.
So in short we can define strength like 'the ability to cause things to happen'.
This is obviously not a definition any physicist would be satisfied with, but it will be enough for our purposes here.
Athletes with the ability to lift heavy weights or run very fast might be physically strong. In every occasion of physical activity, a resistance of some sort is overcome. Either the weight of the dumbbell, the opponents will to win, or the gravitational pull for the high jumper.
Let us therefore add resistance to the definition since all physical strength comes from overpowering the resistance. Without the resistance there is no strength. So in our attempt, we can redefine strength as 'physical strength is the ability to overcome physical resistance and hence cause things to happen'.
So let us define it as 'Mental Strength is the ability to overcome mental resistance and cause things to happen'. But it is not always the ability from making things happen, it is also the ability to resist things from happening, like bad habits.
We all know what that resistance is. It is that "I don't want to do it" feeling. "I don't feel like doing it today, I am too weak, I could never do that, I am not good enough.." Ad infinitum. To able to exert mental strength you need to identify and overcome your own unproductive feelings and "voices in your head" that are not constructive. Usually it is actually just a lack of ability of seeing things in the bigger picture, of looking farther down the road than what you feel this very instance.
Discipline is Mental Strength. Mental strength, or the ability to make things happen regardless of the circumstanses. Discipline is achieveable for anyone but should not be taken lightly. With it you can achieve anything you aim for. Without it you are like a leaf in the wind, unable to succeed at anything unless you are lucky.
In general, people do two major mistakes when trying to discipline themselves to new habits. They aim too high and do to many things at once. In order for you to succeed at anything, you need to take both into consideration.
The first thing to do is to isolate exactly what it is you want to develop your discipline around, quit smoking perhaps? Then, after you have set your mind to what it is you do want, and this is a biggie, you need to jot down what you need to actively disregard in your life until you have achieved that result. Otherwise so much noise will come and destroy your well made plans.
You see, our biggest problems in our 'I-can-never-achieve-anything' lives, is that we are in a hurry and do too many things at once. We humans have a fantastic ability to focus on one thing at a time, but are horrible at doing several things at once. This is a fact of human nature and should be embraced. Your life will become a lot easier if you do!
The next thing is to start small. Like lifting weights, you can't start by going after the heaviest dumbbells in the gym at once.
If you smoke for instance, and you smoke a pack a day, go down to about half a pack a day. In the mean time, the frustration of not having a cigarette in your mouth can be replaced by a carrot for instance. Many studies have shown that to a large degree, part of the habit of smoking is the 'putting something in the mouth' part. As strange as that might sound, we humans really can become addicted to pretty much anything, so "smoke" a carrot every other time.
Then, move down gradually. If you smoked 15 cigarettes a day, go down to ten. Then five, then 3. Then see if you can have a smoke free day. Then have a smoke free weekend. Then a week. Gradually increase your discipline to resist the temptation to smoke.
So, if you have set your mind to excell in discipline, start small, actively make the choice to avoid unconstructive things/events/people and develop a gradual plan to what you want to achieve. Before you know it, your discipline levels will allow you to achieve even more and make you feel better than ever.
